Get your chimney winter ready
As the winter season approaches it’s the best time for a warm cozy fire.
When should you clean your chimney and Why?
It is advisable to have your chimney and fireplace/stove cleaned by a qualified chimney sweep annually. This will prevent a build-up of soot and creosote and greatly reduces the risk of chimney fire.
If any of the following are evident then it’s time to call your chimney sweep.
- Soot dropping into the fireplace.
- Deposits of tar visible in the chimney or stove (Creosote)
- Strong odour coming from the fireplace.
- Smoking or draught problems.
- Birds or animal nesting.
Always protect your chimney making sure the chimney cap is structurally sound and have a cowl/bird guard fitted to prevent animals/pests entering the chimney during the wintery season.
It is also advisable to have a carbon Monoxide detector fitted.
Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, odourless, poisonous gas. Toxic amounts of carbon monoxide can be produced if there is blocked or damaged flues or chimneys.
